Welcome to Values Based Banking for Busy Bankers. My name is David Korslund. After more than four decades in banking, I retired from full time paid work at the end of March 2019. In looking back at my career, I realized that I never had enough time and energy to read and learn about what was going on in our world outside my direct work responsibilities – even though the long term impact of what was happening often directly impacted the work I was doing. Since I began in banking in 1975 the amount of information to absorb and the risks facing banks continue to grow exponentially. Especially in the last few years understanding and addressing risks arising from environmental degradation and wealth inequality are even more important for bankers.
Boomer Banker will provide a curated source of information on relevant issues for bankers who are committed to using banking to address the challenges facing our world as well as the challenges facing banks today. It will provide concrete information regarding the impact banking can have on society – beneficial or not.
Key elements of this site are:
- News You Can Use:
I will provide on a frequent basis links to articles relevant to the themes of this site. These articles will often be behind pay walls but I will provide a very short synopsis of the key points.
- Featured Article:
On a less frequent basis I will write a longer article with a more in-depth discussion of a key topic. This article will often refer to research, books or broader social initiatives that are relevant to values-based banking.
I decided to name my site “Boomer Banker” as I was born in the middle of the baby boom years and was a banker as the banking industry went through an enormous boom with the growth in the financial sector of the economy. But to what extent has that banking boom benefitted society? I believe the answer to that question is complex with both positive and negative elements to be considered.
